What Webb learned at Harvard

I linked to this article once before, but I love it so much that even if its a 1 1/2 years old, I'd like everyone to read it. It's written by President Bush's former professor at Harvard Business School, Yoshi Tsurumi. Read it.

"Since the 1980s, as neo-conservatives have captured the Republican Party, America’s business education has also increasingly become contaminated by the robber baron culture of the pre-Great Depression era.

Bush is the first president of the United States with a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA). Yet, he epitomizes the worst aspects of America’s business education. To privatize Social Security, he is peddling a colossal lie about its solvency. Furthermore, Bush, along with today’s business aristocrats, shows no compassion for working Americans, robbing them to benefit big business and the very rich. Last year, due to Bush’s tax cuts, over 80 of America’s most profitable 200 corporations did not pay even a penny of their federal and state income taxes. Meanwhile, to pay for his additional tax cuts for the very rich, Bush is drastically cutting back several social services, such as federal lunch programs for poor children...."

Now, read Jim Webb's November 15th op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal, and tell me, just whaddya think about that!

"The most important--and unfortunately the least debated--issue in politics today is our society's steady drift toward a class-based system, the likes of which we have not seen since the 19th century. America's top tier has grown infinitely richer and more removed over the past 25 years. It is not unfair to say that they are literally living in a different country. Few among them send their children to public schools; fewer still send their loved ones to fight our wars. They own most of our stocks, making the stock market an unreliable indicator of the economic health of working people. The top 1% now takes in an astounding 16% of national income, up from 8% in 1980. The tax codes protect them, just as they protect corporate America, through a vast system of loopholes."

Just one more thing

I worked for the Navy while Jim Webb was SECNAV. He was one hell of a fine SECNAV. Shit got done, shit got done quick, and shit got done right. There was no bullshit and his influence pervaded the military down to each and every Captain, and therefore, to their commands.

I was proud to serve the country under him.

My ex, who was a totally SAT sailor and airman, even if a totally UNSAT husband, was selected as a member of the helicopter crew to take the SECNAV on his tours of naval bases out on the west coast where we were stationed. The ex thought he was one of damndest fine men he'd ever met.

'Nuff said again.

It's not posted on their website yet, but according to the ticker at MSNBC, AP is reporting that Jim Webb has unseated Senator George Allen in Virginia. Dream Lover, Keith Olberman, briefly stated that Allen is waiting for the final canvassing before acknowledging his defeat.

Hoo-yah!

Double Hoo-yahs to South Dakota for defeating the draconian abortion ban, Kansas for unseating Attorney General Phill Kline, Arizona for rejecting a gay marriage ban, Oregon and California for refusing to put lives of young girls at risk by requiring them to give parental notification before seeking abortion, and Missouri for endorsing stem cell research. Quick Update: Keith just reported that MSNBC has declared Webb the winner and Allen will probably concede by tomorrow evening. Y'know, when he gets around to it.
